The Studio's Philosophy

  • It's all about process.  The process of using and manipulating materials.
  • The child is the artist. The child creates her/his own work, with little or no adult intervention.
  • It's not about the outcome. It's about learning how to use artists tools to create.

At Small Hands Art Studio getting messy, experimenting with materials and having fun is the focus.  Young artists have the freedom to use their imagination and enjoy the tactile aspects of art.

Ansley Young
I began Small Hands Art Studio in 2008 as a way to enrich children's knowledge of art and enjoyment of the process of art creation. I have been an artist in some capacity as a child and into adulthood.  I have created art with my children from toddlerhood and strongly believe that when people are creating, their minds work in ways different from when they are writing, reading or studying math. I feel art is necessary to balance the mind.

With a B.A. in Art History, continued education in studio art classes over the last 15 years, and as an affiliate teacher at the Denver Art Museum during the summer, I offer a broad perspective in studying and creating art to the classroom

Amongst other artistic endeavors, I dedicate much of my free time to painting.  Some of my most recent work has been shown locally.
I look forward to helping your children create and thank you for entrusting them to me while they are at Small Hands Art Studio.

Lauren Jordan
As a teacher, artist and parent, I am passionate about sharing my love for art with children.  I am an Oregon native, and have recently moved to Colorado with my husband and daughter.  After completing my Bachelor of Arts degree in hotel management,  I was the Children’s Director at Bacara Resort and Spa in Santa Barbara, California.  There I had an opportunity to develop and deliver children’s art and educational programs to resort guests.  My passion for education was furthered when I obtained my Master of Arts in Education degree.   Over the past five years, I have enjoyed teaching kindergarten students, where my focus was the integration of art into my curriculum. While teaching kindergarten, I was recognized as one of Oregon Education Associations top five Working Wonders Teachers.

My ultimate goal is for students to love learning.  Every child has unique learning styles and talents.  Through art, and the process of creating art, children are given the opportunity to maximize their talents, while exploring new techniques and ideas.

I have created jewelry and beaded art for many years as a hobby and a business venture. I also spend time using my creative energy on graphic design and other areas of creativity.

I have children of my own and greatly enjoy working with them on artistic projects.  I look forward to helping your children explore their creative side.

I’ve worked with clay on and off over the past 25 years. For the past two years I’ve taught clay working with elementary through middle school aged kids. I always get a kick out of kids’ faces when they first discover the magic of clay. I whole-heartedly believe in mud’s innate power to unleash everyone’s creativity.

I have a Master of Arts in Cultural Anthropology and wrote my Master’s Thesis about the similarities between clay workers across time and culture. With a little guidance and encouragement your kids will come home with some amazing functional and artistic pieces.
